Cavs: Donovan Mitchell Gets Honest on Why He Won't Sign Contract Extension With Cleveland

Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell dropped a bombshell during the team's media day on Monday afternoon, October 2, at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse. 

The 27-year-old bared his plans of not signing a contract extension with the franchise this season, and this revelation has sparked speculation among analysts and fans about the possibility of Mitchell leaving.

However, Mitchell has a compelling reason behind his decision. 

"I want it to be known that I still have the opportunity to sign an extension next summer. I don't think a lot of people understand that aspect. I'm really excited about what we've got going in here and I think that's the biggest thing. We can do something special," the four-time NBA All-Star said. 

The former Louisville standout has three more years remaining on his current deal, with the 2025-26 season being a player option. He is set to earn $33,162,030 for the upcoming 2023-24 campaign.

Mitchell could earn more money by delaying the extension

The 2023 All-NBA Second Team member's decision not to sign an extension at this time could be influenced by the potential of a more lucrative contract if he chooses to do so next offseason.

Mitchell could be eligible to sign an extension that would offer an average annual value of $51.9 million.

This extension would come into effect starting from the 2026-27 season, assuming he exercises his player option in 2025-26 worth $37,096,620, per HoopsHype.
