The Detroit Lions and the Kansas City Chiefs faced off in Week 1 action, although the result was something that not many had anticipated.

The Lions pulled the rug from under the defending Super Bowl champions, 21-20, at the Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday, September 7, an upset that broke the NFL's second-longest winning streak in season openers, ESPN reported.

Aside from this, Patrick Mahomes also saw his record for Week 1 victories blemished. The Lions' upset win over the Chiefs was the first career Week 1 loss for the two-time Super Bowl champion, according to Statmuse.

The Lions trailed the Chiefs in the second half. Mahomes appeared to be doing fine on his own, even with Travis Kelce and Chris Jones unavailable.

However, key defensive plays got the offense of the Lions rolling while the Chiefs made one error after the other, Yahoo Sports reported.

David Montgomery pushed the Detroit Lions ahead with an 8-yard touchdown with about 7:11 remaining in the game. The win was also the Lions' first 1-0 start since 2017.

Goff, Lions eye more wins

Jared Goff had a good game for the Lions, ending with a game-high 253 passing yards. Speaking to reporters, the 28-year-old play caller explained what the win meant to the team via NBC Sports.

"It [the win] means that we are 1-0. We come to every game expecting a win," Goff stated. "We're 1-0 now and we are excited to get back home," he added.

As for fans, there were different reactions on social media about Patrick Mahomes. Some took a swipe at the receiving corps of the Chiefs. Others also prayed that Kelce would be able to rejoin the team soon.
