Former Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson revealed the toll of an NFL career on one's body, which caused him to retire from the game more than seven years ago.

Johnson played nine seasons in the NFL, all with the Detroit Lions from 2007 to 2015. He is regarded as one of the best wide receivers of all time.

The three-time First Team All-Pro selection spoke on the Scoop B Radio Podcast with host Brandon "Scoop B" Robinson, talking about how worse his body got during his playing days.

Johnson said that he would wake up in the morning and drag his feet across the floor to the bathroom to shower to get his body warmed up.

The NFL record holder for most receiving yards in a season would literally drag his feet flat because his ankles were always swollen, and he couldn't bend them until he went to the shower.

Being prepared takes a lot of time

The six-time Pro Bowl selection added that it takes a whole day working all the way up to practice just to get his body good to a point where it's ready to go and play, and he is doing it every single day.

"If you try to get me out on that field an hour earlier? Nah. You're not getting nothing out of me [laughs]... because your body, it needs its time. It takes time," the former Georgia Tech player said.

Johnson announced his retirement after the 2015 NFL season.
