Jacksonville Jaguars assistant strength and conditioning coach Kevin Maxen publicly came out as gay in an interview with Outsports.

Maxen became the first coach within a big four major American sports league (NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL) to come out publicly. He said he does not want to hide who he truly is anymore and hopes to inspire others in similar situations.

He is currently living with his boyfriend of two years, Nick.

"I want to be vocal in support of people living how they want to live, but I also want to just live and not feel fear about how people will react," Maxen said.

Maxen works with the team's offensive and defensive linemen on designing their full workout plan. His job description includes planning exercises, weights, and recovery to achieve their fitness goals and traveling with the team to games.

Maxen has been with the Jaguars since 2021. He used to be a strength coach with Baylor University and Vanderbilt University football teams.

Kevin Maxen reached out to Carl Nassib

Before coming out, Maxen reached out to current free agent linebacker Carl Nassib to seek advice on how to come out and create acceptance for the LGBTQ community in major American sports.

Nassib is the first active NFL player to come out as gay in April 2021 while playing for the Las Vegas Raiders.
