Not only is Jason Kidd running out of antics, he's also running out of assistants. And that's making him an endangered species.
Kidd on Tuesday reassigned top assistant coach Lawrence Frank on Tuesday, removing him from the bench. Frank now simply will file daily reports. Kidd's team responded with a less-than-impressive 111-87 loss to the Denver Nuggets and first-year head coach Brian Shaw.
The same Brian Shaw who interviewed for the Nets job but was unceremoniously passed over for Kidd.
Asked if he could handle additional responsibilities without Frank's experience, Kidd responded coldly, "I've been doing it since Day 1. As head coach, it doesn't change," according to the New York Daily News.
But as the Daily News points out, Kidd may be running out of tactics in saving his job after a few short months.
The report compared the move to a baseball manager firing his pitching coach.
"And we all know what happens to the manager after the pitching coach goes, if the losing doesn't stop," the Daily News pointed out.
Kidd's tenure as Nets coach has been a train wreck. He was suspended for the first two games of the season for a DWI. Then the infamous spilled-drink incident against the Los Angeles Lakers on Nov. 27 brought some comic relief to a season in which the Nets have underachieved significantly.
Kidd was fined $50,000 a day later, but the harsh reality of the Nets' 5-13 record has sunk in.
"We're at home getting beat by 30, 40 points," Kevin Garnett said after Tuesday night's loss, head down, as reported by the New York Daily News. "We're figuring out how to get this together. There are a lot of moving parts. Got to figure this out soon."
Frank coached Kidd when the franchise was in New Jersey, taking over midway through the 2003-04 season, and coached Kidd through the 2008 season.
