The return of Yu Darvish to Chicago Cubs hit a roadblock on Thursday after the team decided to reevaluate him again.
The 31-year-old Darvish who is recovering from a miserable right triceps tendinitis injury has failed to pitch in more than a month. Earlier this week, Darvish engaged in a bullpen session but eventually suffered pain during the extension.
Subject For Reevaluation
Joe Maddon, Cubs manager, said that Darvish will be evaluated once again this Thursday after their game the Los Angeles Dodgers. Darvish made headlines earlier this year when he was signed by the Cubs to a six-year $126 million deal.
Prior to his triceps injury, Darvish suffered a sprained ankle in 2014 and went on to be sidelined for four games.
"He said was more pain. He still felt pain on the extension," Maddon revealed.
Maddon originally predicted that Darvish would be in full condition this Saturday following an impressive showing in a simulated game last Wednesday.
Darvish turned the heads of everyone last week when he recorded a sharp slider and an eye-popping 95 mph velocity. He also had an incredible start on Monday's rehab for South Bend in the Class A division as he recorded five innings.
Yu Darvish Determined To Return
The multimillion-dollar pitcher, who was put in the disabled list last May 26, said that he is hoping to return to the team in the soonest possible time. Darvish hasn't been more of a help for the Cubs this season tallying just 4.95 ERA in 40 innings for a 1-3 in his eight starts.
However, baseball experts say that Darvish should not make promises he couldn't keep as it might pave the way for the people of Chicago to turn on him. During the recovery process, Darvish provided Chicago with a ray of hope when he said that he was a 12 in a scale of 10 before breaking their hearts with the recent development.
With Darvish being sidelined, backup pitcher Tyler Chatwood will be playing as a starter in Saturday's match against the Minnesota Twins. Chatwood was given the green light by the Cubs from the paternity list while moving Dillon Maples to Triple-A Iowa before their game against the Dodgers.
Despite the absence of Darvish, the Cubs have managed to still put up a great performance this season winning 44 of their 79 games for a 44-35 win-loss card. However, the Cubs are currently struggling to pick up victories winning just two of their last eight games. The team will host Minnesota this Friday.
