Chavez, Jr., Manufacturing One Excuse Ahead of Showdown with Canelo?

According to a report on BoxingScene, Julio Caesar Chavez, Jr. and his hall of fame material trainer Nacho Beristain had one incident of verbal sparring in training camp at the world famous Otomi Mountains in Mexico.  The argument sprung up from the demand of the former WBC middleweight champion to end training this week at 3,200 meters above sea level; instead Chavez, Jr. wanted to head back to Mexico City already then to Las Vegas for the rest of the training before May 6.

On Cinco de Mayo weekend, on May 6 at the T-Mobile Arena, Paradise, Nevada, Julio Caesar Chavez Jr. (49-2, 32 KOs) will battle fellow Mexican Saul Canelo Alvarez (48-1,34 KOs)  not for a world title but for Mexican pride and supremacy. Alvarez trains in San Diego California under the supervision of his manager and trainer Jose "Chepo" Reynoso.

"That annoyed me a lot (that Chavez Jr. wanted to finish camp early at Otomi). I told him he was wrong we've been here for a month and a half and on a whim he wants to ruin the job. I'm not playing around. I'm a professional. I told him, "I'm not going to Las Vegas like this. He convinced himself that I'm not playing around and the he told me he's fine, whatever I say," the 85-year old trainer tod ESPN Deportes as per BoxingScene.

Chavez, Jr. has a history of a similar incident in previous training camps. But he was preparing then against lesser opponents. Indeed doing the same thing while training for a bout with Sergio Martinez, who once held a couple of world titles as a middleweight, Chavez, Jr. received a very good beating of his life.

If the aging Sergio Martinez can punish a limited and ill-prepared Chavez Jr., Saul Canelo Alvarez, who at 26 years of age has already held multiple world titles, can all the more do the same thing.

The trainer of over 20 world champions Nacho, 77, knows it best and Chavez, Jr. should, too. But isn't it possible at the back of Chavez's mind he is thinking he might just lose after all? Which is why in his detrimental action at training camp he could be probably manufacturing one excuse ahead of time. The thought really sounds naïve and unsportsmanlike but the human mind like Chavez's is fundamentally unknowable.
