(Photo : Brian Gove/Getty Images) Ricardo Mayorga recently challenges Antonio Margarito. Should they fight, it would be a real boxing spectacle to behold as the two fighters are both known for their aggressive styles.
Ricardo Mayorga, who used to dominate the welterweight division is his heyday in the early 2000, is making a comeback fight this Saturday, at a venue called Chaman, Discoteca, in Managua, Nicaragua. Mayorga will be opposed by a Mexican fighter Jaudiel Zepeda.
Earlier this month, Ricardo Mayorga assumed he was going to knockout Zepeda right in the opening round and failure to do so he said he was going to retire for good. But he seemed to have changed tune, stating recently he wants to entertain the crowd which is why he intends to drag the fight up to the 3rd round. Afterwards he said he wants to climb the ring with Antonio Margarito for his next fight.
Ricardo Mayorga, 44, is known for his penchant at vanquishing opponents through sheer aggressiveness and punching power - that one propelled him to two-weight world championship crowns but he eventually lost to his contemporaries but greater beings like Oscar dela Hoya, Tito Trinidad, and Sugar Shane Mosely. Prior to his 2nd loss to Mosely in 2015, Mayorga, a.k.a El Matador, defeated a Mexican opposition in the person of Andrik Saralegui in 2014.
For his part, Antonio Margarito, 39, is a former three-time welterweight world champion and a typical Mexican fighter. In his younger days, he is said to have been persistently avoided by Floyd Mayweather, Jr. And there could be truth in that considering that Margarito, a.k.a. "El Tornado de Tijuana", is well-known for his iron chin and an aggressive pressure fighting style. He retired in 2012 following brutal defeats against Manny Pacquiao and a rematch with Miguel Cotto but came back fighting in 2016, beating Ramon Alvarez in his latest fight.
Now, despite their relatively advanced age, by looking at the fighting styles of both fighters - both brave and aggressive with bombs in their hands - if and when Ricardo Mayorga and Antonio Margarito happen to meet in a ring collision it would certainly be a fight to behold among boxing fans. A fight of almost insignificant magnitude but in terms of excitement and thrill it can very well knockout a fight involving fighters even as great as Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
