Immediate Rematch for Roman Gonzales and Sor Rungvisai

 Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzales (46-1-0, 38KOs) and Sor Rungvisai (42-4-1, 38 KOs) a few days ago  can be said to have produced one of the finest fights, if not the finest, to watch so far this year. Gonzalez, who tops the prestigious pound-for-pound list by the ring magazine, went down in the opening round due to a wicked body punch he received from the Thai challenger for his WBC super-flyweight world title. But Gonzales would get up at the count of eight.

All through the remainder of the 12-round fight, Roman Gonzales and Sor Rungvisai kept a similar brand -intense and heated exchanges of leaders that often find the target - of fight.  Along the way, Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzales, 29, the only four weight division world champion to come from Nicaragua, became the receiving end of two incidents of head clashes; blood oozing down his face had appeared to alter his accuracy.  Even so, at the conclusion of the fight, majority of observers saw the fight in favor of the Nicaraguan boxing hero in recent times. But Sor Rungvisai, 30, emerged as the official winner via majority decision.  The decision was booed by majority of the crowd who trooped to the Madison Square Garden in New York City last Saturday.  

Roman Gonzalez, who was undefeated in 46 fights, was himself in disagreement with the verdict. He demanded an immediate rematch.  But the Mexican Carlos Roberto Cuadras Quiroa served as a stumbling block; Cuadras who used to be the holder of the same belt that Gonzalez and Rungvisai had fought for is the mandatory challenger to the new champion. Gonzales took the belt from Cuadras in Sept. 2016.

But because of the controversial nature of the outcome of the outcome of the fight, the World Boxing Council (WBC) headed by its president Mauricio Sulaiman is likely to order an immediate rematch between Roman Gonzales and Sor Sungvisai per BoxingScene.  At this point in time, the WBC is waiting for the official protest from the Gonzalez camp as well as of the medical result. The camp of Sor Rungvisai also expressed their willingness to do a rematch - immediate or not - claiming the Thai fighter punches harder than former champion. If all things goes smoothly, the fans can look forward to another mouth-watering battle of little giants in just a couple of months.
