Conor McGregor, over the weekend, finally responded to Floyd Mayweather’s announcement that he is officially out of retirement to fight the Irishman. And apart from promising to “shock the world,” McGregor also shared his idea of when he thinks the fight will happen.
“September is what I’m thinking – that’s what the word is, that’s what we’re close to doing,” Conor McGregor told the Los Angeles Times of the date for his potential fight with Floyd Mayweather. The proclamation runs contrary to Mayweather’s challenge to fight in June, as well as the rumor that a June date has been reserved by the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Conor McGregor was in Madison Square Garden to support his countryman Michael Conlan’s professional boxing debut Friday. The brash Irishman also took the opportunity to scream at ESPN’s boxing pundit Dan Rafael to tell him and everybody within earshot that he is going to stop Floyd Mayweather and shock the world, walking away after proclaiming that “I am boxing.”
The tides keep turning in the ongoing saga of the prospective mega fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor, with the two sides – along with the UFC – coming out with different pronouncements regarding the hypothetical fight that has understandably captured the world’s imagination. But for the meanwhile, it appears that all three – Mayweather, McGregor and the UFC – appears to be in agreement that the fight will happen somewhere down the line.
UFC president Dana White admitted recently that while Conor McGregor’s pursuit of a fight with Floyd Mayweather isn’t good for his business, he isn’t one to stop the UFC lightweight champion from getting the kind of payday that a fight with Mayweather will bring. He also said during an appearance on “Conan,” that with the amount of money potentially involved in the massive spectacle, he doesn’t see how the fight won’t happen.
