The Washington Redskins and their star quarterback Kirk Cousins are in some kind of dilemma. Kirk Cousins wanted out. The Washington Redskins would not relent to Kirk Cousins' request. It's a very tough situation to be in. But now it seems both the Washington Redskins and Kirk Cousins have somewhat found a middle ground on their situation.
On Friday morning, Kirk Cousins just officially signed his one year franchise tender to play under the franchise tag for the Washington Redskins, according to a report from ESPN. Kirk Cousins agent confirmed that his client indeed has signed the franchise tender of the Washington Redskins.
This is the second year in a row that kirk Cousins has signed a franchise tender. Last season, the Washington Redskins also signed Kirk Cousins to the franchise tender for $19.953 million. This is the first time in the history of the NFL that a team has used the franchise tag on the same quarterback.
The signing of the franchise tender now means that the Washington Redskins can trade Kirk Cousins. This also means the Washington Redskins can now review other options with regards to Kirk Cousins.
Kirk Cousins, 28, has been superb for the Washington Redskins for the past two years. Just last season, Kirk Cousins threw for 4,917 yards, a new franchise record, with twenty five touchdown passes and twelve interceptions. Kirk Cousins has thrown fifty four touchdown passes and twenty three interceptions combined in the past two seasons.
With those kind of superb performances over the last two years, Kirk Cousins, as expected, is asking the Washington Redskins for a long term deal. The Washington Redskins would not budge and as a result, Kirk Cousins requested for a trade but was subsequently denied by the Washington Redskins, via a report from Yahoo Sports.
But with Kirk Cousins signing the franchise tender, a trade may be coming soon. The Washington Redskins just couldn't afford to go on for another year with a disgruntled Kirk Cousins.
