A member of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team was the victim of a horrifying accident caught on video Monday when a backboard collapsed as he hung on the rim for a dunk, shattered and nearly crushed him.
The Globetrotters were playing an exhibition in Honduras, according to Philly.com when William "Bull" Bullard took an alley-oop pass off the backboard and slam-dunked.
The 6-foot-4, 217-pound Bullard hung on the rim and then pulled his feet up to the bottom of the backboard. Bearing Bullard's full weight, Philly.com reported, the stanchion gave way and the backboard came down while he was still hanging on to the rim.
Not only did he fall to the ground, but the backboard came down, almost on top of him, the bottom of the backboard either scraping him or just missing him and the glass shattering just past his head.
The video showed Bullard lying on the floor and bleeding from a gash over his left eye.
The next shot is of the crowd watching in stunned silence, but after a brief sequence, Bullard is seen waving his index finger to the crowd signaling that he was OK.
According to Deadspin.com, Bullard played college basketball at Texas A&M=Corpus Christi. His bio on the Harlem Globetrotters' official website said that Bullard once tried out for the New York Jets and made it to the finals of "American Ninja Warrior," a television show on NBC that shows contestants trying to make it through an elaborate obstacle course for a large cash prize.
His bio also said that he had a perfect score at an edition of the College Slam Dunk Championship, but his latest dunk will be the most memorable of all.
