Kevin Owens is set for a huge WWE Universal Championship defense against Seth Rollins at Clash of the Champions.
It will mark the former NXT Champion's first major defense as he takes on "The Architect" live from the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Cleveland on Sept. 25. Owens defeated Roman Reigns with help from Rusev on "RAW" this week to keep the bout a singles clash.
This will mark the first "RAW" exclusive show since the brand extension and the second brand-only event overall, following "SmackDown Live's" successful Backlash event from this Sunday. Rollins is one of the best Superstars on the roster and certainly has shown he has what it takes to carry "RAW," but the company shouldn't make a change this quickly.
Here are three reasons why Owens should defeat Rollins at Clash of the Champions:
1) He Just Won The Belt
The WWE created a huge stir by having Triple H cost Rollins and Reigns the Universal Championship earlier this month, helping Owens to the Universal Championship. Having KO drop the belt this quickly would undermine the whole angle and his victory. Owens has paid his dues in the Indys before getting here and was actually given the rare treatment of growing through the midcard before getting the big prize by winning the NXT and Intercontinental Championships. Now that he's won the biggest title on the brand, it's time for a big run.
2) The Belt Needs To Mean Something
The Universal Championship was greeted rudely by fans at SummerSlam when it was first revealed, but now that the angst has subsided, the WWE needs to focus on growing this new title into a meaningful reward. The company already had to make a quick switch, granted through no fault of their own, as Finn Balor was injured in his match with Rollins and forced to forfeit the title. Playing hot potato with the belt by having Owens lose it this quickly would start to hamper the credibility of the title and beg the question of why they didn't just give it to Rollins to begin with when they had two chances to.
3) Bigger Things Are To Come
This Triple H angle is likely to lead to something huge down the line. It's possible "The Game" and his former protege Rollins will end up having a marquee match in the future. There is also the possibility that Triple H brings in an NXT Revolution, spearheaded by champion Owens, to create a brand new rivalry.
