WWE 'Extreme Rules' 2016 Rumors: 5 Candidates To Breakout At May 22 Event [POLL, VIDEO]

The WWE presents its most "extreme" night of the year when Extreme Rules emanates in eight days.

Superstars will invade the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. on May 22 for the event as the New Era continues to unfold before everyone's eyes. The card has already taken shape and much like Payback earlier this month, several stars appear poised to breakout at this event.

Here are five Superstars who have potential for a huge night at Extreme Rules.

5) Roman Reigns

Love him or hate him, the leader of the Roman Empire put on a great match with AJ Styles last month at Payback. Whether that was due to his own merit or being carried by his veteran opponent is up for debate. Still, if the WWE is going to force him down everyone's throats as the WWE World Heavyweight Champion, at least he can soften the blow by putting on great matches. He did so last month and could have another amazing contest in him as he goes into Extreme Rules.

4) Simon Gotch & Aiden English

The Vaudevillians pay-per-view debut on the main roster had an unfortunate consequence as Enzo Amore was injured in their tag team match earlier this month at Payback. Gotch and English weren't really given a chance to show what they've got, but that'll be different come Extreme Rules. With The New Day set to defend the Tag Team Championships against the former NXT team, Gotch and English have a chance to establish themselves as the next great tag team in the WWE.

3) Sami Zayn

The former NXT standout has put on solid match after solid match in the WWE, but he has a chance to shine with some of the industry's best come Extreme Rules. Zayn is booked for a Fatal 4 Way Match with old rival Kevin Owens, all-world talent Cesaro and reigning Intercontinental Champion The Miz. Owens and Cesaro have already proven what they can do, while The Miz is definitely in the good graces of WWE creative. It's time for Zayn to step up and continue to excel next Sunday.

2) Rusev

Ever since the "Bulgarian Brute" dropped the United States Championship to John Cena, he's grown stagnant. Now that the League of Nations -- which was going nowhere -- has disbanded, Rusev has a chance to capture that same title against Kalisto at Extreme Rules in what could be a match that goes a long way in restoring his heat. Now that he's reunited with Lana and the blonde bombshell is set for "Total Divas," it wouldn't be surprising for the WWE to give him another run with the title much like the gold that was handed to the Miz/Maryse duo.

1) AJ Styles

The "Phenomenal One" is dealing with some nagging injuries, but hopefully nothing alarming enough to hamper his performance. In his first chance to headline a WWE pay-per-view at Payback, Styles put on a tremendous main event with Reigns. The Extreme Rules bout will raise the stakes with its no DQ, no countout stipulation, so Styles will have to elevate his game and his opponent to top their last clash. Styles seems game to put on a great match with just about anyone, so it wouldn't be a surprise if he's the top breakout star for the second straight month.
