The face of the franchise is on his way back to the squared circle.
John Cena has been sidelined for months due to a shoulder injury, which required surgery back in January. The 15-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion has teased recovering quicker than anticipated, and it turns out he shaved off four months of his expected recovery time.
The "Cenation" leader looked to be in great shape when he made a run-in to help The Rock at WrestleMania 32 on April 3. As it turns out, he will be returning to action soon, as he revealed in a tweet on Monday:
Here are five potential feuds for the "Cenation" leader when he makes his return to action.
5) Alberto Del Rio
Cena dropped the United States Championship in an open challenge at Night of Champions in September, but he never really got to have a blow-off match with the "Essence of Excellence" due to his injury. With The League of Nations reportedly set to breakup soon, it appears Del Rio would be a perfect foil for the returning hero.
4) Bray Wyatt
The "Eater of Worlds" has had a rivalry with Cena in the past, including at WrestleMania XXX in 2014, but the two titans may have some unfinished business. Wyatt is sidelined with a calf injury, but he'll likely be back by the time Cena returns on Memorial Day. Since Cena helped The Rock thwart off The Wyatt Family at WrestleMania 32, it would be logical for the WWE to play off of that.
3) AJ Styles
The "Phenomenal One" has been the face of TNA, but he's never set foot in the ring with the face of the WWE. This could be a very compelling storyline and on par with some of the "Cenation" leader's great string of matches he had when he was conducting his U.S. open challenges. If Styles ends up teaming up with Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson to formulate a new Bullet Club, it would add another extra layer to this angle. Hopefully, Cena wouldn't then bury the group like the Nexus.
2) Dean Ambrose
The "Lunatic Fringe" has had a tremendous chance to shine in recent months, and hopefully that string of great booking for him will continue. Ambrose had a tremendous match with Triple H at Roadblock and followed it up with a high-profile encounter with Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania. He could continue his momentum after his program with another tremendous veteran in Chris Jericho by taking on Cena.
1) Roman Reigns
This would be a very interesting encounter if only to see how the WWE Universe would react to two of the most polarizing figures in WWE history. Most members of the IWC don't like either one of these guys, while it would be a great feud for the WWE from a PG standpoint as the younger fans would be torn over who to root for. With Reigns as the WWE World Heavyweight Champion and Cena still in search of tying Ric Flair's record by capturing the gold for the 16th time, a feud with Reigns can never be counted out.
