So the Cowboys are saying there's a chance they'll sign a former Heisman Trophy winner ... not Robert Griffin III, but rather Johnny Manziel.
Though 2011 Heisman Trophy winner RGIII has been linked to the Cowboys since the end of last season, ESPN's Ed Werder told "NFL Live" that the Dallas coaching staff doesn't believe the soon-to-be-banished Washington Redskins quarterback's skill set matches their offensive scheme, via Pro Football Talk.
Los Angeles Rams' Cap Space Moves Could Involve Acquiring RGIII Or Peyton Manning
"Not a lot of people in Dallas think he's a great fit in Jason Garrett's offense, and I'm told that Scott Linehan, the offensive coordinator, is really not a fan of RGIII's and doesn't think he would excel with what the Cowboys would ask him to do," Werder said on NFL Live, via PFT.
Werder did say, however, that the Cowboys had more interest in Manziel prior to the latest allegations of domestic violence against the soon-to-be-banished Cleveland Browns quarterback against his ex-girlfriend.
Robert Griffin III May Be More Attractive Free Agent To Broncos Than Brock Osweiler
Naturally, with the in-season turmoil involving Greg Hardy, who at one point was found guilty of domestic violence before charges were dropped amid an uncooperative witness, and the latest four-game suspension levied against Randy Gregory for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, the Cowboys are looking to avoid any more negative publicity involving any of their players.
However, if the charges are dropped and Johnny Football receives vindication, it will be interesting to see what the Cowboys do.
Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller recently told The Associated Press that Manziel "is on the right track" and is "taking care of business."
If that is true, the Cowboys' interest in Manziel certainly could be rekindled because of owner Jerry Jones' infatuation with the Texas A&M Heisman Trophy winner from 2012 since before he entered the league.
