The Packers’ frustrating season came to an end Saturday night in Arizona, and now that there aren’t any games left, head coach Mike McCarthy is getting honest. Green Bay’s offense struggled all season to put up points, and while a preseason injury to WR Jordy Nelson was blamed, RB Eddie Lacy took several steps back with his production.
Lacy was noticeably heavier this year, in addition to battling a number of injuries. McCarthy spoke candidly about Lacy’s troubles, and warned that he’d better drop significant weight in the offseason.
Eddie Lacy Was The Biggest Fantasy Bust Of 2015
"Eddie Lacy, he's got a lot of work to do. His offseason last year was not good enough, and he never recovered from it," McCarthy said. "He cannot play at the weight he was at this year."
Lacy put up 1,566 all-purpose yards and scored 13 rushing and receiving touchdowns last season while averaging 4.6 yards per carry. This year, he started 12 games instead of 16, dropped to 758 yards, and managed five total touchdowns. Even Lacy admitted he was not as prepared for the 2015 season as he should’ve been.
Eddie Lacy Refuses To Be Fat-Shamed
"I think sometimes when things come easy to you, you kind of ease off a little bit and you get lax," Lacy said after a mid-December benching, and not the first benching of the season. "And things need to happen in order to wake you up and show you that it can be taken away, it can get difficult, but that's how I would say it."
The good news is that both Lacy and the coaching staff are pinning this underwhelming season on his conditioning, which is fully under Lacy’s control. His preseason ADP was No. 3 overall, meaning after a year like 2015 his draft stock will tumble out of pure frustration from fantasy owners who either drafted him there, or traded for him during the season. If he can get in shape, and Nelson can come back with his ability intact, Lacy’s 2016 should resemble his rookie campaign, and not this lost year.
