In news that will hit Giants fans right in the feels, the Eagles, blocked from bringing in Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo by the Giants making him their head coach, have reportedly set their sights on Tom Coughlin.
Coughlin, 69, was 102-90 as the Giants’ head coach over 12 seasons, and he led them to two Super Bowl wins, including one over an 18-0 Patriots team. Coughlin fell on hard times toward the end of his tenure, however, posting four straight non-playoffs seasons, and missing the postseason in six of his final seven years.
49ers Can't Keep Colin Kaepernick If They Want Coughlin
At first glance Coughlin offers a lot that the Eagles need. He is known to instill a culture of discipline, which Philadelphia sorely needs. He’s also a proven winner; over 20 seasons with the Jaguars (as an expansion team) and the Giants Coughlin is 20 games over .500 as a head coach, with a 12-7 record in the playoffs. His two rings are the most alluring part of his resume to the Eagles, who have never won a Super Bowl in franchise history.
Still, Coughlin isn’t their man. At 69 years old Coughlin believes he has two or three years left in him on the sideline, according to ESPN. That’s not enough time for the Eagles to find the quarterback Coughlin needs to compete. Coughlin had Eli Manning for all 12 of his seasons with Big Blue, and Mark Brunell for all eight of his Jacksonville campaigns.
Giants Realizing They Shouldn't Have Gotten Rid Of Tom Coughlin
The Eagles have the opposite of stability at quarterback, having shuttled through Michael Vick, Nick Foles, Mark Sanchez, Matt Barkley and Sam Bradford in the three seasons Chip Kelly was coach. Bradford will be back next year, but he’s hardly the type of foundational player Coughlin has been paired with in his career. He will also have to rebuild a defense that was opportunistic at times, but also among the worst in the NFL in terms of yards allowed both on the ground and through the air.
Coughlin will change the culture if he heads to Philly, but until he’s got a legitimate quarterback, their results will improve only marginally. And Coughlin won’t let them lose enough to draft their way out of the QB abyss.
