Rory McIlroy, a breakout star on the PGA Tour in 2012 after leading all participants in money earned, and hauling in numerous awards including PGA Player of the Year, the Vardon Trophy, and the Byron Nelson Award, has split with tennis star girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki.

Wozniacki, 23, had been together with McIlroy for the past two years, before the Irish golfer decided it was time to end things. A source close to the former couple told The Sunday Independent, "There were a lot of tears. Rory has a lot of respect for Caroline and their time together was good, but he feels it's time to move on now. And he wishes her nothing but the best."

The breakup follows a Twitter photo Wozniacki posted of a sleeping McIlroy after a long flight. She captioned the pic of a passed out McIlroy with his mouth gaped open "Jetlag? Lol!" McIlroy was reportedly not amused, and even Serena Williams weighed in, saying it was "not a very nice thing to do."

Still, McIlroy's decision to part with Woznicacki was said to be more of a golf decision. One source said, "Yes they are over. It's a difficult time for them both but it is for the best in the long run." McIlroy's public relations team is refusing to comment on the split, saying "The Communications Clinic does not comment on Rory's private life."

Recently, longtime golf pro Nick Faldo advised McIlroy to "concentrate on golf," in the midst of a slump. "You have a window of opportunity. You have a 20-year window as an athlete. Concentrate on golf, nothing else. Hopefully, when you retire, 40s, 50s, you will have another 40 years to enjoy it. So just concentrate on golf. I think there's a lot going on in his mind."

McIlroy appeared in 16 tournaments in 2013, making the Top 10 five times and registering zero wins while totaling $1,802, 443 in winnings. The previous year, he won four tournaments and had two second place finishes, and a third place finish to go with over $8 million earned.
