Nick Saban, New York Giants Rumors: Alabama Coach's Age Will Hurt His Chances to Suceed Tom Coughlin [VIDEO]

The Giants have let go of head coach Tom Coughlin, who has spent the last 11 seasons roaming the sidelines in East Rutherford. Coughlin has won two Super Bowls with the G-Men, and famously upset the 18-0 Patriots in the 2006 Super Bowl, but had fallen on hard times since the winning the title in 2012.

Coughlin has presided over four straight losing seasons, with this year’s failures including multiple fourth quarter meltdowns. Now, the attention turns to whom will replace Coughlin, and one of the names that will get a lot of play is current Alabama coach Nick Saban.

Lane Kiffin Should Replace Nick Saban If He Leaves For The NFL

The Crimson Tide are playing Clemson next week in the National Championship Game next week, which would be Saban’s fifth college title if they win. Saban, 64, has very little to prove anymore at the NCAA level, and may want to challenge himself further even if he’s the most important man in the state.

Saban’s brief run as an NFL head coach went sour quickly. He went 15-17 in two seasons running the Dolphins, and earned scorn for repeatedly and emphatically denying he was going back to college, only to accept the Alabama job shortly after the 2006 NFL season ended. Saban’s run was too brief to fully gauge his success in the role, and his consistent excellence at Alabama, in college football’s toughest conference, can only serve to boost his credentials.

Giants May Compete Hard For Sean Payton

Age, though, may be a bigger factor than any of his accolades. The Giants just fired the oldest coach in the NFL, and by bringing in Saban, would be adding a coach just six years Coughlin’s junior. The Giants do not experience much overhaul at the head coach position, and so will likely aim younger for their next coach. Saints coach Sean Payton, 52, and current offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo, 38, have a better chance of getting the gig and remaining in it for as long as Coughlin did.

Saban’s name is flashier, but in the long-term he is not the Giants’ answer.
