The Grand Slam escaped Serena Williams, but not the most prestigious award in sports.
Williams was named the 2015 AP Female Athlete of the Year on Friday, per ESPN. A vote by U.S. editors and news directors saw the 34-year-old collect 50 first-place votes and 352 points. Not even Carli Lloyd -- who scored a hat-trick in the 2015 Women’s World Cup final -- was a match.
Serena Williams Put Her Life In Danger
She finished with just 14 first-place votes and 243 points. Lloyd also couldn’t help but offer her congratulations.
Williams took to Instagram to thank her fans.
Serena Williams Has A New Leading Man
This is Williams’ fourth honor, previously being named Female Athlete of the Year in 2002, 2009 and 2013. She joins Chris Evert as a four-time honoree, but still trails Babe Didrikson, who has six AP selections.
Unlike Lloyd, Williams failed to have that crowning moment in 2015. Her loss to Roberta Vinci at the U.S. open derailed her pursuit of the Grand Slam, but surprisingly not her spirits.
She’s looking for a repeat performance in 2016.
"If I could have this year next year," Williams said, "I would be really excited."
