Amar'e Stoudemire Secret Knee Surgery? Knicks Without Stat Indefinitely? [VIDEO]

New York Knicks forward Amare Stoudemire secretly underwent surgery on his bothersome knees over the summer and the team is uncertain about when he might be able to play.

According to Sports Illustrated, Stoudemire underwent a July procedure to "clean up"one of his problematic knees. Stoudemire played in just 29 games last season as he battled knee issues.

SI adds, while it's not known which knee was operated on, the procedure is not believed to have serious. The Knicks had already announced they plan to have the former All-Star forward under a strict minutes restriction.

Stoudemire averaged 14 points and five rebounds off the bench last season, and was again being counted on to be a key for reserve for coach Mike Woodson. He signed with the Knicks in the summer of 2010, turning down a max deal offer from the Phoenix Suns to come to New York.

The Knicks will also be without reigning Sixth Man of the Year J.R. Smith to start the season after he was suspended for the year's first five games for violating the league's substance abuse policy. The Knicks open the season against the Milwaukee Bucks on Oct. 30.
