Notre Dame Football Rumors: The Case Against The Fighting Irish Deserving The College Football Playoff [VIDEO]

Ohio State and Oklahoma State suffered defeats on Saturday that -- for now -- will prevent them from qualifying for the College Football Playoff. Even with a victory, Notre Dame should join them.

The Fighting Irish claimed a 19-16 win over Boston College at Fenway Park Saturday night. Admittedly, they tried their hardest not to, committing five turnovers. Three alone were inside the Boston College five-yard line.

It proved to be yet another lackluster performance from Notre Dame, and it should be a costly one.

Taking the playoff picture into consideration, Clemson and Alabama will certainly remain No. 1 and No. 2 in the rankings, respectively. The Tigers comfortably dispatched Wake Forest 33-13, while the Crimson Tide cruised past Charleston Southern 56-6.

In Depth Look At Saturday's Shamrock Series Uniforms

Logic says undefeated Iowa will benefit from Ohio State's defeat, but so too should Oklahoma.

Like Notre Dame, the Sooners entered Week 12 with a single defeat. The difference is, the Sooners are beating actual competition. TCU was the latest example, unable to mount the comeback in Saturday's 30-29 contest.

Two of Oklahoma's victories have come against teams ranked in the top 25 of the College Football Playoff rankings. Notre Dame has zero.

The Irish will have their first opportunity -- battling Stanford in the final game of the season -- but so too will the Sooners. Despite a 45-35 loss to Baylor, Oklahoma State will comfortably remain in the top 25, giving Oklahoma the chance to boast three victories against ranked opponents.

If strength of schedule means anything, the program will be rewarded with the Big 12's first berth in the College Football Playoff.
