Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller's suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy was increased from four games to six after the NFL discovered that Miller and a urine sample collector conspired together in an attempt to cheat the NFL's drug-testing program, Yahoo! Sports reports.
Reports indicate that Miller and the sample collector, who worked for Drug Free Sport, attempted to switch out Miller's urine sample in order to give him a clean bill. After the deception was uncovered, the NFL and NFL Players Association met at least four different times before deciding to increase Miller's ban from four games to six. Reports indicate that the NFL mulled suspending Miller for a year, but opted not to since he didn't act alone and had help from the sample collector.
The sample collector was fired soon after word got out about the deceit.
CBS Sports reports that the sample collector was 'star struck' by Miller and the collector worked in Miami where Miller spends offseason time. The collector's admiration of Miller as a football player led to the two working together and substituting someone else's urine sample for Miller's while passing it off as Miller's actual sample.
The deception would have worked, CBS Sports reports, had a second collector not entered the picture and discovered that Miller wasn't even in Miami during the time the sample was handed over. The alleged scam would have worked had the collector not realized that Miller wasn't in the place where the collection was supposed to take place.
Yahoo Sports indicates that the NFL, NFLPA and Drug Free Sport are all working together to try and avoid any other problems with fake samples or any other way of compromising a drug test, and they plan to implement finger printing technology to make sure that such deception won't occur again.
The Broncos (2-0) have fared well without Miller, defeating the defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens in Week 1 by a score of 49-27 and then defeating the New York Giants 41-23. The Broncos next take on the Oakland Raiders (1-1) on Monday Night Football.
Miller, in his third season with the Broncos, has played in 31 games and has notched 30 sacks, one interception, one touchdown and 106 tackles. He's eligible to return in Week 7 when the Broncos take on the Indianapolis Colts on the road.
