Seth Rollins Injury: WWE Champ Tears ACL & MCL, World Title Tournament Announced For 'Survivor Series' [VIDEO]

The Survivor Series just got a whole lot more interesting as a new WWE World Heavyweight Champion will be crowned.

Seth Rollins suffered a knee injury against Kane during a live event in Dublin, Ireland on Wednesday and it was revealed he tore his ACL, MCL and medial meniscus as a result. The reigning WWE World Heavyweight Champion is slated to be sidelined for 6-9 months. Rollins executed the move and finished the match, but that's the last thing he'll do for a while.

WrestleMania Feuds That Could Start At Survivor Series

"The Architect" went to powerbomb Kane from the top rope and when he completed his front flip, his leg buckled, causing the injury. Rollins was set to face Roman Reigns for his championship at Survivor Series on Nov. 22 at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, but those plans have been scrapped.

Instead, the WWE has revealed that a tournament will take place that night to crown a new champion, but no further details have been released, according to WWE alum and current ESPN sportscaster Jonathan Coachman. It's unknown how many Superstars will be in the tournament and who exactly will be vying for the WWE's richest prize.

Stars Worthy Of Aligning With Undertaker At Survivor Series

It's also unknown what impact, if any, this news will have on the ongoing storyline between The Wyatt Family and The Brothers of Destruction, as the rivals have seemed to be building toward a traditional Survivor Series elimination tag team match.

There is a precedent to a one-night tournament to crown a new champion at Survivor Series. At the 1998 event, entitled "Deadly Game," a 14-man tournament was booked to crown a new title-holder. The Rock turned heel and defeated Mankind in the finals, marking the first time The People's Champion ever held the WWE's highest honor.

The last time the WWE Championship was contested under such rules was on the July, 25, 2011, episode of RAW in a tournament won by Rey Mysterio.

Rollins won the belt at WrestleMania 31 in March and had held the gold for 221 days prior to vacating it.
