NFL Survivor Pool Strategy 2015 Week 8: Three Best Bets So You Can Make It To Next Sunday

Survivor pools are fun, and they seem easy, but it’s actually very hard to last longer than a few weeks. For those who have never done a survivor pool, the rules are simple. Each week you pick one team to win outright—usually, survivor pools do not use spreads. Once you’ve picked that team, they’re unavailable to you for the rest of the season.

These are three picks that will keep you alive.

DraftKings Best Bargains At Each Position in Week 8

*Home teams are in CAPS.

The Sure Thing: FALCONS over Buccaneers

The Falcons’ 6-1 record looks very fortunate thanks to one of the NFL’s easiest schedules, and some excellent luck in close games. At home vs. Tampa Bay is one of the safest bets on the board, mostly because the Bucs can’t close – see their 31-30 loss to Washington last week – and Matt Ryan is one of the best fourth quarter quarterbacks in football.

The Bucs’ pass defense is no match for Julio Jones, and Devonta Freeman has become a premier running back out of nowhere. Tampa might keep it close because Mike Evans is a beast, but they won’t win.

The Next Best Thing: Seahawks over COWBOYS

This matchup would be intriguing if Tony Romo were healthy, but even if Dez Bryant rushes back from his broken foot, he’ll have to contend with Richard Sherman, with Matt Cassel throwing the football. Dallas is fully reliant on their running game these days, and they’re up against premier run stuffers. The only advantage Dallas has is TE Jason Witten, and we’re a few years removed from Witten being able to will Dallas to victory.

Defensively, Dallas is below average vs. the run and the pass, so expect a huge game from Marshawn Lynch.

If You Want To Get Cute: RAVENS over Chargers

Seems crazy, and the Ravens have burned me twice this year, but Vegas agrees that Baltimore’s record is not indicative of the team they have. At 1-6, they have lost every game by a one-score margin, which is incredibly unlucky. San Diego is one of the worst rushing defenses in the NFL, so they don’t match up well vs. the Ravens, who enjoy pounding the rock to Justin Forsett and Buck Allen. It is certainly risky, but at this point of survivor pools, these are the kinds of picks you have to have the bravery to make.
