Olivier Vernon News: Miami Dolphins' Star Fined By NFL For Late Hit On Titans QB Marcus Mariota [VIDEO]

Dolphins defensive end Olivier Vernon will appeal the fine slapped on him by NFL on Wednesday for late hit on Titans' quarterback Marcus Mariota, ESPN reported.

While Vernon didn't reveal the amount of the fine, Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald quoted him saying it is "a decent amount."

The hit resulted in a sprained left MCL for Mariota, who didn't miss a snap but finished the game with a knee brace in their 38-10 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday.

Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt surprised many by keeping his franchise quarterback in the game. It's not the first time to play through injury for Mariota, who revealed that he was kept in the game with an MCL injury in college.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that Mariota was diagnosed with a Grade 2 MCL sprain.

Whisenhunt said it appeared Vernon was trying to hurt Mariota with a hit, which many felt was low and came late. Dolphins interim coach Dan Campbell insisted that Vernon is not a dirty player as he was just trying to get to the quarterback.

Vernon apologized after the game to Mariota, who didn't think the hit was malicious. Although he didn't practice Wednesday, Mariota said his knee is feeling better, and could possible play on Sunday against the Falcons.

Mariota added that if he needs to play with a knee brace on Sunday, he will. Whisenhunt said Mariota feels good about his quarterback's ability to move, and noted that there are no issues with his knee.
