It was a foregone conclusion, but Jason Day managed to win his fifth PGA Tour event on Sunday. The 27-year-old finished six strokes clear of his closest competitor, Daniel Berger.
The biggest impact Sunday's victory holds, however, is in the Official World Golf Rankings. Surpassing Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth, Day is now the world's new No. 1. He's only the third Australian to do so -- following the achievements of Greg Norman and Adam Scott.
"I've just had to work so hard," Day said, per ABC. "The mentality swung at The Open Championship. Something changed in my head, and I thought it's my time to start winning tournaments.
"For our whole team lately it's all been about reaching No. 1. I felt a lot of pressure over the last few days. Yesterday and today had to be the toughest rounds of golf I had to play in my entire life."
It didn't show. Day is the only player -- along with Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh -- to win at least five tournaments in a calendar year the last two decades.
