Colin Kaepernick Preseason News: QB Could Be Headed Down Same Path As RG3 [VIDEO]

The writing could be on the wall for the NFL quarterback who had the breakout 2012 season and has been regressing ever since.

His nickname is not RGIII, but he could become the next RGIII, according to The Washington Post.

Offensive Line Woes May Negate Colin Kaepernick's Offseason Work With Kurt Warner

Colin Kaepernick is trying to become a better pocket passer, and spent the entire offseason working with quarterbacks coach Dennis Gile and two-time NFL MVP Kurt Warner on technique, touch and decision-making.

It's the decision-making that is the cause of concern for Kaepernick during the 2015 preseason.

The Sacramento Bee reported that the 49ers want to take Kaepernick out of his comfort zone by giving him and the offensive line more drop-back situations.

"I want to know exactly what we have and I want to look at it," coach Jim Tomsula told radio station KNBR this week. "It might not look pretty on TV, and the things that we're working out might not be what everybody wants to see, but we're seeing what we need to see."

What the 49ers have seen is Kaepernick go 5-for-13 passing for 40 yards with no touchdowns and now interceptions during the preseason.

What The Washington Post sees is a dangerous strategy by the 49ers.

"I am not sure more dropbacks are a good thing, even if Kaepernick did work on his mechanics this offseason with former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner," the Post's Neil Greenberg reported. "Of the 577 dropbacks Kaepernick took in 2014, he was sacked on 52 of them. All but six of those occurred when he held the ball for longer than 2.6 seconds. His average time to throw: 2.96 seconds per the game charters at Pro Football Focus.

"... But not playing to Kaepernick's strengths could set him on a path for failure, not unlike what we saw in Washington with Robert Griffin III."

The Santa Rosa Press-Democrat reported that Kaepernick's 2014 throw time was actually 2.68 seconds. But his average throw time during the current preseason has been 3.34 seconds. His backup, Blaine Gabbert, has gotten rid of the ball in 2.3 seconds during the preseason.

Gabbert's quarterback rating in 2015: 108.8; Kaepernick's is 47.0.

"I'm not saying Gabbert is better than Kaepernick -- I'm saying Gabbert has the right idea for this scheme and this offensive line," the Press-Democrat's Grant Cohn writes.

But the comparison to RGIII has to be frightening for 49ers fans just before the start of the 2015 season.
