Recap: Mexico City still belongs to America. The club earned a 2-0 victory over Cruz Azul on Saturday and momentarily moved to the top of the Liga MX Table.
Genuine chances were few and far between in the first half, forcing both clubs to enter the break scoreless. America would flex their proverbial muscle from there. A pristine first touch from Paul Aguilar fed the head of Oribe Peralta inside the six-yard box. The calmly opened the affair. Superior individual skill from Dario Benedetto sealed the 2-0 victory.
Key Moment: Christian Gimenez had the opportunity to equalize for Cruz Azul in the 64th minute. A squared ball from Matias Vuoso left him with an open net, but Paolo Goltz’s recovery parried the shot to safety.
Man of the Match: Rubens Sambueza continues to impress. The club-captain completed 94.8 percent of his passes and created three chances.

Lesson Learned: Cruz Azul are already in trouble—carrying just six points through seven games—but the injury to Marc Crosas can be a devastating blow depending on its severity. The 27-year-old was forced to leave Saturday’s match with what appears to be an injury to his right knee. Prior to his departure, Crosas won 60 percent of his duels, completed 84.4 percent of his passes and was clearly the engine behind Cruz Azul’s attack. Gerardo Torrado is likely to see action in his absence, a serious downgrade for a club in desperate need of points.
Up Next: Buth clubs return to league action following the international break. America host Tigres UANL on Sept. 12, while Cruz Azul visit Monterrey on the same date.
