Browns Position Battles To Watch

Josh McCown vs. Johnny Manziel: Johnny Manziel has been surprising during OTAs and training camp both on the field and off. He threw the ball well in the first preseason game and actually led the Browns in rushing with 14 yards and a touchdown. That was more of a reflection on Cleveland’s running back corps, but he looked capable.

McCown was very solid as well though, and it’s going to take some monstrous production for Manziel to unseat him. The coaching staff is just in love with him.

Isaiah Crowell vs. Duke Johnson vs. Terrance West: This is an underwhelming battle. Isaiah Crowell should be running away with it but he isn’t and the RB coach Wilbert Montgomery bad-mouthed him because of that. "He's got to show me that he's hungry,” Montgomery said.

"And (what) I mean by hungry, if you want to be a starter, you practice like a starter and you do the things that you'd want.”

Duke Johnson is intriguing, but injury-prone. He hasn’t been practicing, and that’s no way for a rookie to get a starting job. Terrance West is fading.

Bills Position Battles To Watch

Matt Cassel vs. Tyrod Taylor Taylor is the interesting one here, but Cassel has to be considered the favorite. Cassel is the veteran who will “move the chains,” or be a “game manager” or whatever cliché helps coaches who start Matt Cassel sleep at night.

Taylor could be an unmitigated disaster as a starter, and it doesn’t make sense that EJ Manuel has been buried so far. Do not count him out completely.
