The Jets experienced a shock in their training camp this week when starting quarterback Geno Smith was punched in the face by a reserve linebacker named IK Enemkpali, breaking his jaw. The Jets are reportedly seeking out veteran quarterbacks to bring into camp, and one sticks out—Michael Vick.
Vick played for the Jets last season and had mixed results. Vick started only three games, throwing for 604 yards and three touchdowns and two interceptions. At 35, it seems as if Vick's best days on the ground are behind him; Vick took off 26 times for 153 yards and no touchdowns.
These Veteran FAs Aren't Getting Any Love This Offseason
Vick's previous experience with the Jets is less valuable in 2015 because the regime that signed him has been cleaned out. New head coach Todd Bowles has brought in Chan Gailey to be offensive coordinator, and he runs a different system than Marty Mornhinweg. The Jets will not be bringing him into their camp, per NFL.com.
3 Teams That Should Be Calling Michael Vick
Rex Ryan was interested in bringing Vick to the Jets last year, but even though he now has quarterback issues with the Bills, he isn’t planning to make a call.
“Mike will tell you, he’s not built really for a bad weather quarterback. He doesn’t have great big hands, and the weather affects him some. And he’d be the first one to tell you,” Ryan said of Vick.
“You get the wind that we’re gonna have in our stadium and the snow and all that stuff, that’s not in his best interests. And quite honestly, I considered it. We considered it. And I know that’s not the spot for him.”
