New York Yankees Break With Tradition: Team Criticized for Wearing White-Brimmed Hats, Later Reveal Hats Are for Charity Event

Friday night's score: The New York Yankees 1, the New York Yankees' public relations department zero.

The Yankees, who are the epitome of tradition, made a change in their home uniforms that caused a stir among fans. During their game against the Detroit Tigers, the Yankees wore white-brimmed hats.

The Yankees, who are famous for wearing the home pinstripes with navy blue caps and nameless jerseys without wavering, donned the new hats as part of their partnership with New Era and the David C. Koch Foundation to help fight cancer, CBSSports.com reported.

The problem was that the Yankees didn't inform anyone of their uniform change before the game.

New York's appearance drew sharp criticism from fans on Twitter:

From AmandaRykoff:

"MY EYES. THE GOGGLES DO NOTHING RT @bubbaprog: WAIT WAIT WAIT. What are the Yankees wearing!??"

From Jesse Spector:

"The Yankees take the field wearing white-brimmed hats for some ungodly reason."

From Northern Ballplayer:

"White brims. Really? You're the fricken #Yankees! You're supposed to have navy hats and pinstripes! #GetWithTheProgram"

And from Ricky Morin:

"White brims. Really? You're the fricken #Yankees! You're supposed to have navy hats and pinstripes! #GetWithTheProgram"

After a series of negative tweets, the Yes Network gave an explanation behind the change in headgear.

"For everyone asking, the @Yankees are wearing white-brimmed hats tonight for cancer charity. #GivingBack #LetsGoYankees"

The Yankees also posted an explanation on its website Friday night.

"Instead of their customary navy blue New Era 59-Fifty caps with the interlocking 'NY,' the Yankees took the field with their white-brimmed batting practice and Spring Training caps.

"The change to the New Era Diamond Era collection caps is part of a partnership between the Yankees, New Era and the David C. Koch Foundation to help fight cancer, according to the team. This marks the first time that the Yankees have worn the moisture-wicking gear in a Major League game."

The Yankees also explained that they have other hats, such as camouflage to honor the military.
