Today at 3:40 p.m. ET, the Seattle Mariners (35-42) and San Diego Padres (37-42) close out a brief two-game set live from Petco Park in San Diego.

Seattle continues a nine-game road trip it is 2-2 on thus far while San Diego looks to avoid a three-match losing streak as it closes out a five-game homestand it is 2-2 on.

The Mariners took the opening game of this series on Tuesday 5-0.

Catcher Mike Zunino (9) and shortstop Brad Miller (7) each homered for Seattle in Tuesday's game while third baseman Yangervis Solarte got the lone hit in the contest for San Diego.

Taijuan Walker (6-6, 4.64 ERA) mans the mound for the Mariners while the Padres counter with James Shields and he owns a 7-2 mark with a 4.24 ERA thus far this season.

Walker has gone 5-1 in his past six starts with a 1.91 ERA, 44 strikeouts and three walks after a nightmarish start to the campaign. 

Shields, who is third in the National League in strikeouts, has a 2.78 home ERA, but he comes in on the heels of allowing seven earned runs in four innings against the San Francisco Giants.

Shields faces a Mariners lineup that is paced by designated hitter Nelson Cruz, who will play in the outfield in an NL park. Cruz ranks third in the American League in homers (19, tied), fourth in slugging percentage (.550) and fifth in OPS (.919). The slugger also has a club-best 19 homers.

The Padres counter with a roster that is led by outfielder Justin Upton, who leads the team with a .269 batting average, 14 homers and 46 RBI.

In the standings, Seattle enters July in fourth place in the AL West, 9.5 games behind the first-place Houston Astros while San Diego sits in fourth in the NL West, seven games behind the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Mariners look to split while the Padres seek a sweep when these clubs close out a brief two-game interleague series live from Petco Park in San Diego.
