Atlanta Braves general manager Frank Wren said Wednesday that a tweet Tuesday night from the team's official Twitter account meant to barb 20-year-old Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper was "an inappropriate attempt at humor."
During Tuesday night's game, the benches cleared, but no punches were thrown at Nationals Park after Braves pitcher Julio Teheran drilled Harper in the leg with a pitch, angering the Nat's slugger.
Harper had gone deep off Teheran, who was looking for his 10th win of the season, in his previous at-bat for his 17th homer of the 2013 campaign, and was angered by the fact that Teheran hit him with a pitch in his following plate appearance, believing it to be on purpose.
After Harper yelled at Teheran and incited the benches to clear, the Braves Twitter account mocked the outfielder's infamous remark to a reporter last season that saw Harper bark, "That's a clown question bro."
"That's a clown move bro," the Braves official Twitter account tweeted.
The Nationals account was quick to respond, answering the Braves with a tweet of their own:
"Which part, giving up the home run, or drilling the 20-year-old on the first pitch his next time up?"
While the two accounts went back-and-forth on social media and cleared the benches on the field, it was Atlanta who got the last laugh on the diamond Tuesday night, as the Braves won the game 2-1 and extended their National League East division lead to 14.5 games over Washington.
Will there be a response in tonight's series finale? Davey Johnson doesn't think so.
"It's just baseball as usual," Johnson told reporters prior to Wednesday night's game according to ESPN.
Whether it's just baseball as usual or not, Wren is upset that the Braves stooped to a Twitter jab at Harper and the Nationals last night.
"I think it was simply an inappropriate attempt at humor from our social media department," Wren said according to the Braves official website. "It doesn't reflect how we feel or how we want to do business or who we are. You shouldn't be directing anything unless it's positive or uplifting to another team or an opponent. I think that is plain and simple."
