AC Milan Transfer News: Axel Witsel Signing to be Confirmed by Club, Beating Chelsea and Manchester United

There's been little to celebrate at the San Siro in recent years. AC Milan's downward trajectory culminated in the absence of European football for next season, something Chelsea and Manchester United will be able to enjoy.

One thing the two Premier League clubs won't be able to enjoy, however, is the talent of Axel Witsel. According to the Express, the Belgian midfielder is set to be confirmed by AC Milan on Wednesday.

Per the report, Milan hoped to land Geoffrey Kondogbia from Monaco. Unable to, the club opted for Witsel—a target linked with Chelsea and Manchester United—instead.

The move will serve as the first tangible sign of Sinisa Mihajlovic's promise to bring Milan back to the summit of Italian football. The newly appointed boss enters the new campaign replacing Filippo Inzaghi and with the intentions of qualifying for the Champions League.

"For me, it's a great satisfaction to be here [at Milan]," Mihajlovic told reporters (via Football Italia). "Being here having been former opponent is exciting. We'll do everything to bring Milan back to the top, where they deserve to be. It won't be easy, but we'll succeed."

Witsel made his competitive debut in 2006 with Standard Liege, a mere 17 years young. Five years later, the Belgian international signed a five-year deal with Benfica before moving to Zenit St. Petersburg in 2012. Last season, he made 28 appearances and finished the season with four goals and an average of 1.2 tackles.
