With the MLB trade deadline a mere day away--set for Wednesday at 4.00 p.m.--the potential trade talk around the league is heating up.
It appears that Phillies third baseman Michael Young may be heading back to Texas while Jake Peavy is being heavily targeted by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Reports indicate that now that the Phillies, with a 49-56 record and an aging core, are expected to make some big moves at the deadline. The Phils have called up third baseman Cody Asche leading to speculation that Young's future with the team may be in doubt and he is on the trading block.
It appears as though Young will be benched tonight when the Phillies face the San Francisco Giants. If Young is benched, it doesn't mean that there definitely will be a move, but it could be just a precautionary measure for the Phillies in case they want to move him. Young has a no-trade clause in his deal and has said he only wants to be traded to Texas, where he played 13 seasons until he was traded this past offseason to Philadelphia.
The Rangers ate $10 million of the $16 million remaining on Young's deal when he signed with the Phillies.
This season, Young is hitting .277 with seven homers and 32 RBIs. The Yankees reportedly had interest in him, but it's unknown whether or not he'd waive his no-trade clause to go to the Bronx.
Meanwhile, speculation as to whether or not Jake Peavy, the most coveted pitcher reported to be a possible trade candidate, will be moved today or tomorrow. The White Sox have skipped Peavy's start Tuesday night against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field, leaving many to believe that he could be on the move.
Gordon Eades, who covers the Red Sox for ESPNBoston.com, tweeted the following Tuesday afternoon:
"Source: Arizona emerges as the front runner for Peavy."
It seems as though White Sox general manager Rick Hahn may have a potential deal with Arizona, if the Diamondbacks are willing to take on Peavy's contract which runs through 2014 and still has an estimated $20 million on it.
This season, the 32-year-old right-hander is 8-4 with a 4.28 ERA.
Another potential pitcher that could be traded is the Houston Astro's Bud Norris, who was scratched from his Tuesday start against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.
Norris is 6-9 with a 3.93 ERA for the worst team in baseball.
It remains to be seen if Young, Peavy or Norris will be moved, but the speculation is increasing rapidly as the deadline nears.
