Albert Pujols is out of the Los Angeles Angels lineup on Saturday and he is having his left foot examined after he aggravated his already-existing injury in a ninth inning at-bat on Friday.
Angels manager Mike Scioscia isn't sure how long the injury will keep the first baseman out of the lineup, but he slotted Mike Trout into the number three hole that was vacated by Pujols' absence.
"It's sorer than anything he's dealt with or he's been playing through," Scioscia said of the injury to Pujols on Saturday, according to MLB.com. "We'll just see what happens."
Pujols has been aggravated by plantar fasciitis in his left foot all season, but following his ninth inning at-bat on Friday the injury nagged him worse than it had all year long.
Pujols, 33, has played 66 of his 99 games as the designated hitter for the Cardinals this year while also splitting time at first base, and suggested he "feels the same" and "still feels some pain" prior to the team's weekend series against the Athletics.
Pujols knocked in two runs with a two-out RBI single off of Grant Balfour Friday, but only made it to first base before signaling to the bench and being replaced.
Pujols, who is in his second year with the Angels after defecting from the St. Louis Cardinals by signing a 10-year $254 million contract with the Angels prior to the 2011 season, is hitting .258 with 17 homers and 64 RBIs.
The team will wait for team doctors to further evaluate Pujols before taking any further steps with the slugger.
