New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter played in a simulated game on Saturday, and reports say he might be able to return to the lineup Sunday.
Jeter has only played in one game this season after a twice-broken left ankle injury kept him out of the lineup until July 11. Jeter suffered a Grade 1 sprain to his right quadriceps in his first game back, and hasn't played since. Jeter says the quad injury now feels fine and he was examined by team doctors following batting practice on Saturday.
The Yankees are hoping that Jeter will return to the lineup, which is in much need of a boost, on Sunday.
"I feel fine, everything feels good," Jeter told the Daily News after batting practice and his medical examination. "Always hopeful. We'll see. I really have nothing for you. I didn't assume there would be anything [wrong]. I didn't think there would be anything. Glad there isn't. Hopefully it's fine."
Manager Joe Girardi said he was "hopeful" that Jeter will return Sunday. The Yankees currently sit a four games over .500 with a 54-50 record. The Yankees could use a boost to the lineup as they sit eight games out of first place in the American League East, where the Rays currently sit atop.
Jeter, 39, is a five-time World Series Champion and 13-time all-star. The Yankee captain leads the team all-time with 3,304 hits and games played 2,585. The captain hopes to return to the lineup and give the Bronx Bombers a boost.
Jeter played 159 games in 2012 and hit 15 homeruns and had 58 RBIs and had a .316 batting average.
