2012 Triple Crown winner and American League Most Valuable Player Miguel Cabrera is out of the Detroit Tigers lineup against the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field on Tuesday night after leaving Monday night's game with a sore hip.
Cabrera was in pain after he came around to score a run on a Victor Martinez two-run single with two outs in the fifth inning on Monday night. The run put the Tigers up 3-0 and the team eventually won 7-3, but perhaps the cost of the run was greater as Cabrera hurt his hip after scoring.
The all-star third baseman was bothered by a back problem before the break, but it was a hip flexor that took him out of the game on Monday night as he departed after scoring the third Tiger run in the fifth inning.
Matt Tuiasosopo will bat third for the Tigers and Don Kelly will take Cabrera's place at third base Tuesday.
Cabrera currently leads the Major League Baseball in batting average with a .358 clip and in hits with 134. His 31 home runs and 0.666 slugging percentage rank second in the majors. His 96 RBIs led the league until Monday night when Chris Davis surpassed him by knocking in his 97th run of the season.
The Tigers (54-44) are in first place in the AL Central and hold a 2.5 game lead over the Cleveland Indians. Cabrera is a huge reason for his team's success by putting up MVP-caliber numbers just one season after he won the AL MVP and AL Triple Crown with a .330 batting average, 44 homers and 139 RBIs.
Cabrera is also an 8-time All-Star and won the World Series in 2003 with the Marlins. He's listed as day-to-day and the Tigers hope to get him back in the lineup soon.
