According to Wrestlingheadlines.com, the appearance wasn't meant to permanently solidify him on the main roster, but Zayn was originally booked to work SmackDown on Tuesday before his injury. The current plan is for him to remain in NXT until the WWE is ready to utilize him full-time.
Zayn hurt his shoulder when he was trying to hype up the crowd prior to his bout with Cena, but he worked the contest anyway after visiting with the trainer at ringside.
There's still no official status on the severity of the former NXT Champion's injury, but there is some belief that it is serious and could sideline him for a while.
Per the report, there was talk backstage at SmackDown that Zayn could be out of action for a few months. The company also hasn't received a report back on the injury.
Zayn is set to face Kevin Owens for the NXT Championship at NXT Takeover: Unstoppable on May 20, but the WWE may have to switch its plans around.
Zayn had a memorable debut and a fantastic match with Cena, but it didn't come without a cost.
