The full draw for the 2015 Kentucky Derby posts was held on Wednesday. Odds-on favorite American Pharoah (5-2) drew post No. 18, while second-choice Dortmund drew post No. 8.
For trainer Bob Baffert, all that proved to be of little consequence. With Gato Del Sol winning the 1982 Derby from the 18th post, Baffert has some history on his side.
"As long as there's been a winner [from that gate]," he said (via USA Today). "I didn't want to carry that with me. But it takes a good horse to win it. I mean the break is going to be so important. He gets going. He's quick, and so he'll be right there in the mix."
Victor Espinoza, who will be tasked with riding another Derby winner, was pleased with drawing an outside post.
"I definitely didn't want to be the one horse, that's for sure," said Espinoza. "I mean, I don't think it matters, but just to be safe. I feel more comfortable to be on the outside.''
