Aaron Hernandez News Update: Urban Meyer Says Don't Blame Him, Florida Coaching Staff For Hernandez's Troubles

Ohio State football Coach Urban Meyer is disputing reports that he was an “enabler” to Aaron Hernandez while coaching him at the University of Florida, allowing him to remain eligible even though he failed multiple drug tests.

“This is absolutely not true,” Meyer told The Columbus Dispatch in a text message. “Hernandez was held to the same drug testing policy as every other player. He was an athlete at Florida 4 -7 years ago. Our staff, myself and our families worked very hard to mentor and guide him.”

The former New England Patriots All-Pro tight end remains jailed without bond in the execution-style slaying of 27-year associate and semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd, whose bullet-riddled body was found less than a mile from his North Attleborough,  Mass. home three weeks ago.

Up until now, Meyer has largely remained silent about the developments, but told The Dispatch he now felt compelled to speak and set some of the record straight.

“Prayers and thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim,” Meyer also texted. “Relating or blaming these serious charges to the University of Florida, myself or our staff is wrong and irresponsible.”

The Patriots, meanwhile, have severed all ties with Hernandez, 23, and even offered fans the option of returning jerseys of his purchased in the team gift shop for those of other team members.
