New York Knicks Rumors: Phil Jackson On Awful Season, 'Sh*t Happens' [VIDEO]

The New York Knicks are having an abysmal season, but if there is a positive, it is that they should have the best chance of landing the number one overall draft pick in the draft, which features both Jahlil Okafor and Karl-Anthony Towns as potential franchise players.

Team president Phil Jackson was brought in to turn the franchise around, and he may very well accomplish that goal, but the team was (and still is) in dire need of a roster makeover. Jackson likely expected that there would be some bumps in the road, although he probably did not expect the worst season in franchise history. Still, the Zen Master always keeps it even keel and looks at the bright side, which was exactly what he did during a recent address to season ticket holders, according to the New York Post.

"This is our opportunity, and it may be a godsend," Jackson said. "I commiserate for the people who put a lot of money out there, who have season tickets who sit and watch the game. I empathize with that part of it. To rebuild this team, we knew we were going to have to take the team apart to get where we have to. I can make the argument we had to go through it. S-t happens and this season it did happen to us.''

While looking at this season as a godsend may be a strong take, it is certainly an opportunity to draft another franchise player to pair with Carmelo Anthony. As for whether the team is leaning toward Okafor or Towns, Jackson gave some hints but revealed nothing definitive.

"Defender,'' Jackson said when asked whether he preferred an offensive or defensive big man. "That's a good starting point - a guy like Tyson Chandler and the defensive passion they have to have. So many screen and rolls, so many 3-point shooters, a player of size has to cover and protect the basket but also step out defensively and do defensive work on the extreme part of the floor. It's very important for that player to have defensive capabilities.''

The Knicks are not a lock for the top pick, but they will draft high, and they are likely to have a shot at either Towns or Okafor. We will see what happens as the draft approaches.
