Twitter is becoming the most romantic entity for world-class athletes.
U.S. Olympic hurdler and aspiring bobsledder Lolo Jones has agreed to go on a date with a college student at the University of Georgia, FoxSports.com and USA Today are reporting.
The man, Bubby Lyles, sent a tweet to Jones in June asking if he could take her out on a date if he were to get 150,000 retweets of the message. She agreed, and Lyles got the 150,00th retweet on the Fourth of July.
Jones apparently was unfazed by the support Lyles received, according to her tweet when he reached the magic number.
"@harrylylesjr 2x Olympic champ @elsupersanchez ran down to the dining hall and told me the news. I cant wait to go out on our date!" she tweeted.
To which Lyles replied, "Good looking out @elsupersanchez, looking forward to it @lolojones(.)"
Of course, Lyles might have surmised that the way to Jones' heart was through social media. She has had a big presence on it.
In May of 2012, Jones tweeted that she was a virgin and was going to wait until marriage. Last month, Jones dropped a Vine video to her Twitter followers featuring her paycheck for $741.84 for bobsled work. The video was meant to be in good fun but received criticism in the bobsledding community.
Asking for a date on Twitter is becoming normal practice.
In May, Memphis Grizzlies basketball player Quincy Pondexter asked out Miss Tennessee, Chandler Lawson on a date via Twitter. She accepted his invitation, at least publicly. No report has come forth confirming whether that date actually took place.
Last month, Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook helped an engaged couple who are big Thunder fans when he went on Twitter and helped the man with a marriage proposal to the woman. She also said yes.
