Security At 4th Of July Fireworks Shows On High Alert In Wake Of Boston Marathon Bombing

All across the nation, law enforcement agencies are beefing up security details at July 4 fireworks displays in an effort to avoid potential terrorist plots similar to that staged at the Boston Marathon.

According to the Christian Science Monitor, The FBI and Homeland Security jointly released an alert last week to all state and local police departments warning that “consumer fireworks… can be misused by criminals and violent extremists to construct improvised explosive devices.”

Brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev are thought to have built the bombs they are alleged to have set off at the Marathon, killing three people and injuring nearly 200 others. Dzhokhar Tsamaey later told investigators their original plan called for them to strike during Independence Day festivities.

The two men also allegedly crafted their homemade explosives using powder extracted from fireworks typically sold during summer months.

According to the Christian Monitor, the FBI’s field office in New York has dispatched extra bomb technicians to Boston to assist officials from the state Department of Conservation and Recreation in overseeing events there.

Across the country, restrictions at displays ranged from no backpacks to mandated times that crowds can meet to limits on how huge or far displays can span.
