The NFL draft is just over a month away, and while nearly everyone is now certain that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will select a quarterback with the top overall pick, there is starting to be some doubt about which player they will take. Marcus Mariota is unquestionably the better athlete, but Jameis Winston may be the most promising non-Andrew Luck prospect in a decade.
Broncos To Bench Peyton Manning During Season?
But could concerns about Winston's physique and conditioning habits cause him to drop in the draft? Winston looked a bit out of shape at a workout several weeks ago, but many assumed that he would work into shape as the draft approached. Now, nearly two months later, Winston still looks a bit... flabby, and he has been training with QB guru George Whitfield Jr. in San Diego for almost the entire time, according to Busted Coverage.
Winston started training with Whitfield on January 21. That was over eight weeks ago, and this is still the kind of shape he is in.

Obviously there are other quarterbacks that have succeeded despite not looking like a Men's Health cover guy, but it seems fair to wonder if Tampa Bay or any other NFL team will look at how Winston's body has not transformed despite constant training and wonder if dietary discipline or poor work ethic might be a factor.
What happens if Winston does not spend his entire offseason working with a trainer? Would his weight balloon, forcing him to spend training camp and the early part of the season getting in shape, thus limiting his development?
There are already questions about Winston's character, although most NFL teams do not seem overly troubled by them, but if teams also think he may lack the work ethic to keep his body able to perform at a high level, then that may scare them off, because nobody wants to draft the next Jamarcus Russell.
