RG3 Rumors: Marcus Mariota Not Biggest Threat To Robert Griffin After Redskins Re-Sign Colt McCoy?

The question about what the Washington Redskins will do about their quarterback situation seemed to be resolved when head coach Jay Gruden indicated that Robert Griffin III would be the team's starter in 2015. My, how things can change in just a few weeks.

Since that declaration, rumors have emerged that indicate that the team will definitely draft Marcus Mariota with the fifth pick in the 2015 NFL Draft if he is still on the board. However, another move by the team may be an even bigger threat to RG3's starting gig.

Last year, Colt McCoy came in because of injuries to Giffin and backup Kirk Cousins, and he promptly played better than either of them. He held on to the starting job for several weeks, and at one point, Gruden even indicated that he thought that McCoy was the best quarterback on the roster.

While the McCoy signing may not mean anything since the draft is still to come (he would likely be the first quarterback released if the team does in fact draft Mariota), it could mean that Gruden is preparing to have RG3 on a very short leash once the season starts.

It could even mean that there will be an open competition for the starting role during training camp if the team feels that Griffin is not working hard enough or showing the type of progress that they wish.

The only thing that is certain is that, despite the earlier assurances from Gruden about RG3's starting status, the signing of McCoy creates yet another obstacle between Griffin and a long-term tenure as Washington's signal caller.
