Colin Kaepernick Trade Rumors: 49ers in Talks With Bears, Eagles About Unloading Quarterback? [VIDEO]

It appears that the San Francisco 49ers intend to rid themselves of all remnants of the Jim Harbaugh era - including his handpicked quarterback.

Sportsnaut.com and Jayson Braddock of KBME SportsTalk 790 in Houston reported Sunday night that the 49ers are exploring trade options for quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Tomsula gets vague about using quarterback Colin Kaepernick

According to sacramento.cbslocal.com, the Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles both have had discussions with the 49ers about the star-crossed quarterback.

Kaepernick led the 49ers to back-to-back NFC Championship Games and took the team to a Super Bowl XLVII appearance.

49ers deny removing Jim Harbaugh items from team museum out of spite

But after signing a team-friendly seven-year, $126 million deal last summer, Kaepernick gave the 49ers the power to cut him before April 1 before each season without having to pay Kaepernick any money remaining on his contract.

Then, the University of Nevada alum went out and had his worst season as a starting quarterback in terms of quarterback rating. The 49ers finished 8-8 in 2014 and fired Harbaugh.

New coach Jim Tomsula, who was defensive coordinator under Harbaugh, originally vowed to use Kaepernick more like he was used during his rookie season when his rushing ability was a huge factor in getting the Niners to the Super Bowl.

But just more than a week ago, Tomsula was a bit more vague about Kaepernick's role going into next season, backtracking somewhat on the promise of Kaepernick's rushing responsibilities.

"We want to utilize the total package that Colin has," Tomsula said, according to the Sacramento Bee. "That's what we want to do. Does that mean Colin Kaepernick is going to be the leading rusher every week? No. No plans on that at all. But let's use everything he has - like we have done."

Kaepernick has been working in the offseason with two-time NFL MVP Kurt Warner on improving his pocket-passing skills, but the 49ers have been mum about their anticipation of how Kaepernick will look when he's finished with his offseason away from the team.

Recently, the San Jose Mercury News reported that the 49ers removed a Harbaugh exhibit from their museum. Now, they could be removing a Harbaugh player from their field.
