Bill Cowher Car Crash: Former Pittsburgh Steelers Coach Wrecks Mercedes In NYC

Former Pittsburgh Steelers Coach Bill Cowher was involved in a midday car crash Sunday along New York’s famed Park Ave. that completely totaled his black Mercedes-Benz.

According to the New York Daily News, Cowher, 56, was blindsided by a woman driving a Ford Fusion near E. 92nd Street, causing him to veer out of control and strike another vehicle before crashing into some scaffolding and cracking a pipe at a nearby construction site.

The Super Bowl-winning coach, who now works as an analyst for CBS “The Today Show,” was not injured or ticketed in connection with the crash.

The Daily News reports Cowher recently purchased a pricy condo in Manhattan, fueling speculation that he might soon be ready to return to the sidelines as coach of either the Giants or Jets. Giants’ coach Tom Coughlin is among the league’s oldest leading men and the Jets, under Rex Ryan, are coming off of back-to-back disappointing seasons.

Cowher has not coached since walking away from the Steelers in 2006, the only head coaching job he’s ever held. Cowher is also the only coach in NFL history to guide a team to the playoffs in his first six seasons.

Baltimore Raven coach John Harbaugh can join him in that distinction if the defending Super Bowl champs advance to the playoffs this season.
